The communities of
Presteigne and Norton, in Powys, Mid Wales, and
Ligné, in Loire-Atlantique, France, have established a twinning agreement. Ligné is a town of some 3,000 people, about half an hour's drive north east of Nantes. It has a mix of agriculture and industry and also, like Presteigne and Norton, is close to a border - in this case between Brittany and the Loire district. The primary objective of the twinning project is to develop social, cultural and sporting links between the towns, but we are also keen to promote tourism and encourage international co-operation and understanding.
The mayor of Ligné, together with other members of the town council, came over to Wales to see Presteigne and the surrounding area in 2000. Then, in October 2001, a group of people from Presteigne and Norton went to Ligné and spent the weekend there. We were made very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. In return, we organised a highly successful return visit for our friends from Ligné in October 2002. During this time, other exchanges have developed, notably between secondary school pupils, young footballers and ramblers. To formally inaugurate the twinning agreement, a ceremony took place in Ligné in October 2003, and a reciprocal event was held in Presteigne in May 2004.
